The Brothers Director is responsible for hosting at least one brothers social per month. In addition to monthly sisters socials and joint socials, the community will have enough opportunities and variation throughout the semester to develop strong bonds of friendship. It is important to have socials on different days and at different times every month so that different crowds are able to attend. For example, always having socials on weekends might be easier logistically but commuters will most likely not be able to come. You can try to coordinate with the Sisters Director and have the separate socials on the same week/day, but feel free to move the dates around if that suits the brothers better.
You can vary the locations of the socials according to the brothers' interests. Generally, some brothers in the community have cars and volunteer to drive, so don’t let travel keep you from planning an amazing social!
The following is a list of social ideas that have worked in the past. The Brothers Director should add to and update this page throughout his term to serve as a resource for future Brothers Directors. You may also reference the Sisters Socials page for additional ideas.
Watch parties can play a huge role in scheduling brothers socials, depending on how enthusiastic the brothers are that year and what sports they may be into. These events can be the Superbowl, NBA playoff games or Championship series, and huge UFC events. It might be helpful to make an ESPN+ account. This allows you to purchase UFC PPV fights, which have been incredibly popular in the past with brothers. Use Divvy to create a virtual card, and purchase a year’s membership.
As Brothers Director you are responsible for the entire community of brothers. This means constantly checking with everyone and gauging interest in different types of events. If brothers tend to prefer watch parties instead of outdoors-y stuff, go for it and vice versa. You should be careful however to plan events that appeal to everyone, not just the loudest voices. You can gauge interest either by making a google form or asking around in person, being active in the community, and hearing from individuals about their preferences.
Food is a great way to bring community members together and incentivize hungry students to come out to events. Reference the MSA Food guide for a list of food options and expenses.
