If you're looking for ideas for socials, here is a compiled list of potential events!
| Event | Description |
|---|---|
| Barbeque at the Masjid | Have a barbeque with the masjid community |
| Community Hike | This can be a local activity of a destination one! There are two Fire Trail hikes in Berkeley (one starts behind the Golden Bear Stadium, and the other behind Clark Kerr). Further trails can be Indian Rock or Tilden. A potential idea is to have a pre-Fajr hike, pray Fajr on the trail, and then get breakfast. |
| Trivia/Game Night | Community members can create teams, or you can assign them. Trivia can be Islamically themed or Worldly themed. MSA owns a handful of different board games, and you can do brackets to determine an ultimate winner. |
| Bowling | There are two nearby bowling locations, Albany Bowl and AMF Southshore Lanes |
| Community Screenings | This would be documentary screenings, so a little different from a movie night. Some potential movies to be screened are: Blessed are the Strangers, For Sama, Unmosqued, The Feeling of Being Watched. |
| Picnics | You can organize a potluck picnic at Willard Park or any other green spaces on and near campus. |
| Museums | Visit a museum and grab food afterward! Some museums and exhibits are: Oakland Museum of California (RESPECT: Hip-Hop Style & Wisdom), Museum of the African Diaspora, Exploratorium: After Dark Thursday Nights, SFMOMA, and BAMPFA. |
| Go-Kart | Two go-kart locations are K1 SPeed in San Francisco and LeMans Karting in Fremont. |
| Beach Bonfire | Ocean Beach and Baker Beach are two potential locations for a bonfire. |
| Scavenger Hunt | An idea is to group new freshmen or junior transfers with older students, and to have the scavenger hunt introduce them to the Berkeley campus |
| Baking/Cooking Contests | This can be Brothers v Sisters, in their own kitchens or otherwise, and then have a panel of judges. |
| Spoken Word Night | A potential collaboration with Threads. There are lots of community members who do Slam Poetry or Spoken Word, and this is a great idea to showcase their talents. |
| Laser Tag | There's Q-ZAR Laser Tag in Concord and Zone Laser Tag in Dublin |
| Arcade | There's High Scores Arcade in Alameda and Players Sports Grill & Arcade in San Francisco |
Here are some of the socials we did and had planned in 2019-2020.
| Event | Description | Location | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Picnic at the Park | Play games (Spikeball, soccer, football, water balloon dodgeball, Taboo, cards, frisbee). You can plan some community bonding activities. Remember to bring tarps, polaroid camera, and a cooler. | Willard Park | Welcome Week |
| Bowling | Rent lanes at Albany Bowl and randomly split people up into lanes, so that they can meet new people. Buy pizza once you get there. Have everyone venmo MSA around $10, except for the people who volunteer to drive | Albany Bowl | Fall and Spring Semester |
| Hike | Go on a hike in Berkeley, on the fire trails behind Clark Kerr. Bring someone to give a short halaqa when you reach the top. Have lunch or icecream in the masjid after. | Clark Kerr Fire Trails | Fall and Spring Semester |
| Escape Room | There is an escape room in Oakland. Max is 24-30 people so this social would be better for a later time in the year. Food is not provided. Drivers should not be expected to pay | Oakland | Anytime |
| Kayaking | The kayak center provides equipment, a windbreaker, and a wetsuit if you want one! If you do not want to wear a wetsuit, wear something that will allow you to row and be active. Go bonfiring after kayaking, and bring a blanket to sit on. | Monterey Bay Kayaking Center | Spring Semester |
| Cooking Contest | Get in contact with the basic needs center as they will help you in the process of securing the kitchen, have alumni or community members be the judges | Kitchen in Morgan Hall | Anytime |
A basic icebreaker question answers:
- Name?
- Year?
- Major?
- A short fun fact (favorite smell, pet peeve, etc.)
Split people up into groups of five or six, and give each group a card with the question on it. Have the group discuss and debate, before rotating the cards clockwise.
Questions for would you rather:
Choose a partner, introduce yourselves, and play one round of rock-paper-scissors. Whoever loses becomes the a cheerleader for the winner, as they go to play someone else. Eventually you should end up with two players playing against each other, each one with a giant “hype-crew” behind them.
Choose two topics that are debatable and have people split up into two sides of the room depending on which they prefer. After discussing with the other people on their side, have one person from each side try to convince the judges that their choice is better.
